Aminata Thiam, known as Myamy TheAyGirl, is the first female beatmaker in Senegal. She has loved music since childhood, and through hard work and determination, she has broken gender barriers in the music industry. In addition to producing music, she teaches the art of beatmaking, a key element of hip-hop production that originated in the United States. Thanks to beatmaking software, this practice has become popular in Senegal. However, even though hip-hop culture is more accessible, women still face barriers in the industry. The Senegalese hip-hop scene, and music in general, is growing, but conservative ideas about the role of women in society remain a barrier for aspiring female artists and producers.
